There is an old joke about probability: What are the chances of walking out of your front door tomorrow morning and bumping into a live dinosaur? A mathematician will tell you the probability is zero. A philosopher will tell you it’s 50/50—either you meet one, or you don’t.
But if you live in Pattaya, the probability isn’t just huge. It is a daily certainty. On most days, you will find yourself literally trying to squeeze between the dinosaurs just to cross the street.
Spending years inside this neon grid permanently breaks your internal calculator for evaluating reality. Sometimes, I get invited to do consulting audits for nightlife venues outside the city. Earlier this week, I was sitting in a karaoke lounge over in Rayong, talking to the management. I asked them a simple operational question: “What is your protocol if tomorrow, absolutely zero girls show up for work?”
They looked at me like I was a madman. “That’s impossible,” they laughed.
Strange people. I have personally watched the entire staff of a venue in Pattaya spontaneously vanish and not show up for a shift—in two different bars, on two different occasions.
How do you explain to normal people that Pattaya operates in a completely parallel universe? A lot of our readers—some who have never been here, and some who visit for two weeks a year—read these posts, shake their heads, and confidently declare in the comments: “That’s impossible. That doesn’t happen.”
But how do you explain to them that the statistical probability of your Pattaya girlfriend currently having another boyfriend, a secret sponsor, or a legal husband back in her village is hovering somewhere around 156%?
How do you explain the completely inverted morality of the city? How do you make someone understand that having sex with a stranger in a hotel room isn’t infidelity—it is simply clocking in for a shift at the factory. But waking up at 7:00 AM, walking down to the street cart in pajamas, and buying khao tom (rice soup) or moo ping (grilled pork) to eat together in bed… that is an act of profound, exclusive love.
How do you explain the overwhelming, miraculous probability that almost every girl a tourist meets is conveniently on her “very first day” or “first month” working in the bar?
Whenever you talk to people who don’t live inside this specific ecosystem, you catch yourself realizing that your foundational baselines for reality have completely diverged. They live in a world governed by traditional physics, where actions have logical consequences and dinosaurs are extinct. You live in a world where the impossible happens every Tuesday.
Have a great Sunday, everyone. Thank you for reading, for arguing with us in the comments, and for continuing to confidently evaluate the probabilities of this city as low.
