Thomas, 55, from Austria, decided it was time to hit the reset button on life.
He told his friends back in Vienna that he was moving to Pattaya for the superior climate, the fresh seafood, and the long, meditative walks along the ocean. He conveniently forgot to mention that the air quality index (AQI) was currently hovering at a toxic 180, and the only “long walks” he was taking were the 15 unstable steps between his bar stool and the toilet in a heavily smoke-filled dive bar on Soi Buakhao.
But then, the Pattaya magic happened. Enter a woman named Ped
Ped is not exactly in the springtime of her youth, but my God, the woman has the energy of a turbocharged engine. Some mornings, Thomas wakes up with severe lower back pain just from trying to survive her bedroom experiments. They have been together for exactly 24 days, and Thomas is utterly convinced this is the greatest decision of his life.
Sure, Ped has a “past.” The kind of past you don’t bring up at a Viennese dinner party. But Thomas rationalizes it brilliantly: “Turn on the TV, look at the politicians and celebrities! Do any of them have a cleaner past than my Ped?” Fair point, Thomas.
In just 24 days, Thomas feels he has achieved what eluded him for 55 years: absolute paradise and a spectacular, devoted woman.
Month 2: The Isaan Inception
By the second month of his new life, Thomas experiences a profound psychological breakthrough. He suddenly realizes that his true, lifelong childhood dream—a dream he simply couldn’t articulate until Ped helped him find it—was to build a house in Surin province. Specifically, in the remote district of Amphoe Prasat.
It’s a brilliant plan. It all makes so much sense! He will build a massive, multi-generational compound to house: Ped, Ped’s younger sister, the sister’s kids, Ped’s two kids, her grandmother, her parents, and the six street dogs that are the size of water buffaloes.
Oh, and a master bedroom for Thomas and Ped, of course.
“Everything is so cheap here!” Thomas thinks. “How did this simple, genius idea never cross my mind before?”
The investment begins. Thomas takes a trip up country to Amphoe Prasat to inspect the construction site. He is slightly underwhelmed. There is no infrastructure, no ocean breeze—just a square of baked red dirt surrounded by endless rubber trees and sweltering 40-degree heat.
Fortunately, Thomas has zero desire to manage a construction project in the jungle. And luckily, Ped has a very capable, tattooed “brother” who graciously volunteers to take over the entire building process. Thomas just needs to authorize the Western Union transfers.
The Brag
Back in the smoky air-con of his favorite Pattaya bar, Thomas is beaming. He is texting his friends in Austria photos of cinderblocks and cement mixers.
“I AM BUILDING MY HOUSE,” he types proudly. “I always dreamed of having an estate in Surin, you remember, right?”
His friends send thumbs-up emojis. Thomas orders another beer, feeling like a conquering king. He is a landowner. He is a patriarch.
The Punchline
What Thomas doesn’t know yet is the fundamental law of Pattaya physics.
The house will be finished in about eight months. The tile work will be surprisingly nice. The six buffalo-dogs will love the yard. The grandmother will enjoy the new kitchen.
But Thomas will never sleep in that master bedroom.
By the time the roof goes on, Thomas’s money will run out, or Ped will suddenly develop a tragic, unfixable “family emergency” that requires him to go back to Austria to work for just a few months.
And that highly capable, tattooed “brother” who managed the construction? He’s going to love sleeping in Thomas’s master bedroom. After all, it’s his wife who paid for it.
BONUS EXPAT LESSON: DON’T BE THOMAS
